Many people say that La Antigua is the most beautiful city in Central America.
Others call it the loveliest Spanish Colonial town in the world.

Over 200 years ago, when Guatemala extended from the lower part of Mexico to Costa Rica, Antigua was its capital.  Antigua was one of the three major centers of power in the New World along with Lima, Peru and Mexico City, Mexico.  On July 29, 1773, time stopped in Antigua.  On that day a devastating earthquake destroyed the city.

Its cobblestone streets stand today as they were in 1773 as a monument to man's dogged determination.  This city, miraculously restored, contains some of the finest examples of Spanish Colonial art and architecture in the Americas: cathedrals, convents, plazas and residences from the 16th and 17th centuries.  Antigua, included in UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1979, was one of the first planned colonial cities in the New World.

There are beautiful restaurants, art galleries, lively bars, a theater and library.  A multicultural, multilingual pueblo, Antigua is also an authentic working Guatemalan town.

From Antigua, you can raft down unspoiled rivers and climb the volcanoes that shaded Mayan civilization.  A day-trip will take you deeper into Mayan life; you can fly to the stunning ruins of Tikal in the morning and be back in Antigua in time for cocktails.  Tikal is one of the wonders of the world.  From your base in Antigua you can play golf on a championship course, or snag a sailfish or you can simply relax and soak in the rich ambiance that makes Antigua famous.  The cultural diversity is a combination of Mayan and Spanish heritage which produced more than 22 Indigenous Languages that are still spoken in Guatemala today.

Guatemala is one of the most interesting countries in the world.  It is the size of Tennessee, with an array of ecological zones, five mountain ranges, and 33 volcanoes.  For example, Tzutuhil women wear full trajes and headpieces that a New York or Paris fashion designer could not put together with more originality, style, or color.  Not only are our residents fascinating but so are our visitors.  For centuries, Guatemala has appealed to the well traveled and well educated.

You won't need a car in the easily walked 12 square block city which, because of its 5,000 foot elevation, is spring like all year round.

SHOP TIL' YOU DROP
This expression could have been coined in Antigua.  The crafts are world-famous and many one-of-a-kind stores are within strolling distance of the inn.  Take a walking tour of Antigua and marvel at the Spanish colonial ruins, choose a Spanish language school, visit an Indian village and market, learn to dance the merengue or samba or relax after a perfect massage.  When you're feeling especially energetic, play tennis at the lovely Club Antigueño, ride horseback, or mountain bike through a coffee plantation.
